If you want a premium conventional action camera from current Gadgets Online NZ stock, the closest like-for-like decision is DJI Osmo Action 6 versus GoPro HERO13 Black. DJI Action 6 gives you a 1/1.1-inch square sensor, variable f/2.0–f/4.0 aperture, up to 8K/30fps in Normal Video plus 4K/120fps in supported modes, 50GB usable built-in storage and 20m waterproofing without an extra case. Neither wins every job. DJI is the stronger starting point when built-in storage, deeper case-free waterproofing, square-sensor reframing, 8K capture and direct DJI audio integration matter. GoPro makes more sense if you prefer its 5.3K60 capture, HyperSmooth workflow or already own GoPro mounts and accessories.

DJI Action 6: why choose it?
The DJI Action 6 Standard Combo is the stronger all-round starting point when you want a conventional action camera with flexible social-media cropping and minimal “what if I forgot a card?” anxiety. The square 1/1.1-inch sensor is useful when the same capture may need horizontal and vertical outputs, while 50GB usable built-in storage adds a practical fallback.
Variable f/2.0–f/4.0 aperture is another differentiator. It does not magically make every night shot better, but it gives the camera another way to manage different light and optical behaviour compared with a completely fixed-aperture workflow.
Choose the Adventure Combo only when the extras solve a real problem
The DJI Action 6 Adventure Combo uses the same camera platform but adds three Extreme Battery Plus batteries, Multifunctional Battery Case 3 and a 1.5m extension rod. That can be excellent value for skiing, travel days, hiking or long filming sessions.

GoPro HERO13 Black: why choose it?
GoPro HERO13 Black remains a strong traditional action-camera choice for users who value 5.3K60 capture, HyperSmooth 6.0 and the established GoPro accessory ecosystem. Its 1900mAh Enduro battery is designed for extended performance across changing conditions, and the current listing includes Bluetooth audio support for compatible devices.
The ecosystem question matters more than spec-table bragging. If you already own GoPro mounts that solve your helmet, chest, bike and handheld angles, switching systems can cost more time and money than a small camera-spec advantage saves.
What about GoPro MISSION 1 and the wider 2026 lineup?
GoPro's MISSION 1 Series became globally available in May 2026 and is positioned by GoPro as a compact cinematic camera system rather than a direct HERO Black replacement. MISSION 1 uses a 50MP 1-inch sensor and GP3 processor with up to 8K30 capture, while MISSION 1 PRO reaches up to 8K60; both support 4K120 Open Gate capture. GoPro describes the HERO Black line as the option optimised for traditional action sports and POV use.
That category distinction matters. MISSION 1 can be more relevant to filmmakers prioritising a larger sensor, Open Gate capture and cinema-style workflows, but it is not a like-for-like substitute for a small conventional action camera. GoPro also currently sells MAX2 as a 360 camera, which belongs in the reframing-first category discussed below.

No MISSION 1 or MAX2 camera listing was present in our store catalogue. Where GoPro MAX2, Insta360 and 360 cameras fit
A 360 camera solves a different problem. Instead of deciding the final frame while shooting, you can capture a spherical scene and reframe later. That can be powerful for skiing, motorcycling, travel and solo creation where the camera cannot always be aimed precisely.
The trade-off is workflow: reframing can add editing time, file-management complexity and extra lens-protection considerations. GoPro's current MAX2 belongs in this category rather than the conventional Action 6-versus-HERO13 comparison. At the time of this 14 August store audit, Gadgets Online NZ did not have an active MAX2 or Insta360 camera listing, so we are not inventing a current product-versus-product recommendation.
Choose by activity
Mountain biking and cycling
Prioritise stabilisation, mount security, battery planning and the field of view you genuinely use. Test the mount for vibration before an important ride. A high resolution number cannot rescue a loose mounting point.
Skiing and cold-weather trips
Battery behaviour, gloves-friendly controls, quick mounting and spare power are more important than one marketing headline. The Action 6 Adventure Combo makes sense if multiple batteries remove a real friction point.
Beach, surf and snorkelling
Read the exact waterproof depth, seals and manufacturer instructions. DJI’s current Action 6 specification states 20m without an extra housing; HERO13 Black states 10m. For deeper or higher-risk use, the correct protective housing and maintenance matter.
Vlogging and creator work
Audio, front-screen usability, vertical/horizontal output and transfer/editing workflow often matter more than maximum resolution. If you already use compatible DJI microphones, OsmoAudio can simplify Action 6 audio. If your creator setup is built around GoPro accessories, staying in that ecosystem can be more efficient.
Resolution is not image quality by itself
DJI's 8K/30 Normal Video mode gives you more source resolution when that mode suits the shot, while HERO13 Black's 5.3K60 combines high resolution with a higher frame rate. Both cameras also offer 4K/120 options for high-frame-rate capture and slow motion. Those headline modes are not directly interchangeable: Action 6's 8K recording is limited to 16:9, uses RockSteady/RockSteady+ as its available EIS choices and has additional field-of-view and workflow restrictions. Sensor behaviour, exposure, stabilisation, lens, bitrate, light, heat and editing all affect the final image. Choose the recording mode you will actually use rather than buying the largest number on the box.
A five-question action-camera test
- Where will it be mounted? Helmet, chest, bike, handheld, car or underwater?
- What is the final output? YouTube landscape, vertical Reels/TikTok, slow motion, or reframed 360?
- How long will you shoot away from power? This decides whether an Adventure-style battery kit matters.
- Does spoken audio matter? If yes, price the microphone workflow before choosing the camera.
- What gear do you already own? Existing mounts and batteries can make ecosystem compatibility worth more than one new spec.
