Updated August 2026 · DJI smartphone-gimbal buying guide for New Zealand
If you are comparing DJI Osmo Mobile 8 vs Osmo Mobile 8P in NZ, both are 3-axis smartphone gimbals with 360° pan rotation, built-in extension rods, built-in tripods, Apple DockKit support and approximately 10-hour rated operating time under DJI’s test conditions.
The real reason to move to Osmo Mobile 8P is the newer pro framing and tracking workflow: it is slightly heavier, uses DJI’s 8th-generation stabilisation, adds the detachable Osmo FrameTap remote, and supports the newer DJI OM Multifunctional Module 2. The current 8P Advanced Tracking Combo includes both FrameTap and Module 2; the Standard Combo includes FrameTap but not Module 2.
Quick recommendation
Choose Osmo Mobile 8 if you want the lighter 370g gimbal with 360° pan, DockKit and the first-generation Multifunctional Module included in the current Gadgets Online NZ package. Choose Osmo Mobile 8P Standard if FrameTap remote framing is the main upgrade you want. Choose 8P Advanced Tracking Combo if you also want Multifunctional Module 2 for expanded subject/object tracking and live module feed on FrameTap.

DJI Osmo Mobile 8: Best for a Complete Mainstream Phone-Gimbal Setup
The live DJI Osmo Mobile 8 package at Gadgets Online NZ includes the gimbal and DJI OM Multifunctional Module.
DJI’s current Mobile 8 feature set includes:
- approx. 370g gimbal weight
- 7th-generation 3-axis stabilisation
- unlimited 360° horizontal rotation
- Apple DockKit tracking on compatible iPhones/apps
- built-in extension rod and tripod

The included first-generation Multifunctional Module adds tracking for people, cats and dogs in supported native/third-party camera apps, plus integrated fill light and audio reception with compatible DJI Mic transmitters.
Choose Mobile 8 if:
- you want the lighter option
- people/pet tracking covers your use case
- you do not need a detachable live-view remote
- you want the first-generation Multifunctional Module included in the current local package
- you want 360° pan and DockKit without moving to the 8P system
DJI Osmo Mobile 8P Standard Combo: Best for FrameTap Remote Framing

The live DJI Osmo Mobile 8P Standard Combo upgrades the gimbal platform and includes the Osmo FrameTap detachable touchscreen remote. DJI’s official current documentation states that Multifunctional Module 2 is not included in the Standard Combo.
FrameTap can be used to adjust gimbal parameters, switch shooting modes and control the gimbal remotely. DJI states up to 10m remote-control distance under its supported workflow. Android users can mirror compatible phone screens directly to FrameTap, while iPhone screen mirroring uses the DJI Mimo workflow.
Choose 8P Standard if:
- remote framing and gimbal control are the main reasons you are upgrading
- you want the newer 8P clamp and tripod design
- you want 8th-generation stabilisation and boosted motor power
- you do not yet need Module 2’s expanded object-tracking functions
DJI Osmo Mobile 8P Advanced Tracking Combo: Best for Expanded AI Tracking
![]()
The live DJI Osmo Mobile 8P Advanced Tracking Combo adds DJI OM Multifunctional Module 2 to the FrameTap-based 8P workflow.
Module 2 expands tracking beyond people, cats and dogs to include vehicles and general objects in supported workflows. General-object tracking requires manual box selection and appropriate subject contrast/size. Module 2 also provides a built-in adjustable fill light and can transmit its live view to FrameTap.
Choose 8P Advanced if:
- you want FrameTap plus live module view
- you need vehicle or general-object tracking
- you want the newer Module 2 fill-light/tracking system included rather than purchased later
- you regularly film yourself from a distance and need stronger remote composition control
What Is Osmo FrameTap?
FrameTap is the defining 8P hardware difference. It is a detachable touchscreen remote controller that can remain attached to the gimbal or be used away from it for remote framing and control.
With Multifunctional Module 2, FrameTap can display the module’s live feed and let you select/lock supported subjects. Without Module 2, FrameTap still provides remote control and compatible phone-screen mirroring functions.
Multifunctional Module vs Multifunctional Module 2
First-Generation Module
Used with Osmo Mobile 8 and compatible with 8P. It supports person, cat and dog tracking, fill light and compatible DJI microphone audio reception.
Multifunctional Module 2
Designed for 8P. It adds vehicle and general-object tracking, supports video transmission to FrameTap and includes an adjustable fill light. DJI lists eight brightness/colour-temperature levels with a 2500–6500K range.
If your subject is usually a person or pet and you do not need FrameTap live feed, the first-generation module may already cover the workflow.
Osmo Mobile 8 vs 8P for iPhone
Both support Apple DockKit on compatible iPhones and apps, allowing native/third-party subject tracking without relying only on DJI Mimo. Compatibility depends on phone model, iOS version and app support, so check DJI’s current compatibility list before buying.
8P adds FrameTap, which is more relevant when you want to place the phone/gimbal away from you and still monitor composition.
Osmo Mobile 8 vs 8P for Android
Both support DJI Mimo and Multifunctional Module tracking workflows on compatible phones. 8P’s FrameTap adds direct supported Android screen mirroring, which can make rear-camera self-filming easier from a distance.
Which Is Better for Vlogging?
For ordinary walking vlogs and selfie content, Mobile 8 already provides strong stabilisation, 360° pan, an extension rod and tracking. 8P becomes easier to justify when remote framing, stronger motors or advanced object-tracking workflows matter.
Which Is Better for Small-Business Content?
If one person films products, demonstrations or social clips alone, 8P Advanced can be valuable because FrameTap and Module 2 support remote composition and broader subject tracking. If the camera operator is standing behind the phone, Mobile 8 can be the better-value tool.
Which Is Better for Travel?
Mobile 8 is slightly lighter and simpler. 8P is more capable for remote/self-filming but adds hardware. Choose according to whether FrameTap will actually be used rather than assuming the newer model must be better for every traveller.
Do You Need a Phone Gimbal at All?
Not always. Modern phones already have strong electronic/optical stabilisation. A gimbal is useful when mechanical pan/tilt control, smooth walking shots, 360° movement or subject-tracking composition solves a real limitation in your filming.
If your biggest problem is poor audio, a wireless microphone may improve the finished video more than a new gimbal. Read our DJI Mic 3 vs Mic Mini 2 NZ guide.
