Perfume samples and decants solve a simple problem: a fragrance can smell convincing for five minutes and still be wrong for you after three hours. A small format lets you test the opening, dry-down, projection, comfort and real-life use before committing to a full bottle.
But “sample”, “decant”, “tester” and “travel atomiser” are not interchangeable. At Gadgets Online NZ we sell more than one small-format type, so this guide explains exactly what each means and how to use it.

What is a perfume sample?
A sample is a small amount of fragrance used to experience the scent before choosing a larger format. Samples can be brand/manufacturer vials, retailer-listed sample formats or miniatures depending on the product. The listing should tell you what you are buying.
A sample is especially useful when the note family is unfamiliar, the full bottle is expensive, or two concentrations sound similar on paper.
What is a perfume decant?
A decant is fragrance transferred from a larger genuine bottle into another smaller container. For GONZ listings that are specifically described as hand-filled decants, the source bottle is the original retail fragrance and the customer receives the stated small atomiser—not a miniature replica of the original bottle or brand packaging.
For example, our Louis Vuitton Imagination 8ml listing states that the atomiser is carefully hand-filled in Auckland from an original retail bottle. The product images may show the source bottle for reference while the order itself is the filled atomiser described in the listing.
Sample vs decant vs tester: why the words matter
A full-size retail tester bottle is commonly a demonstration format, sometimes supplied in different outer packaging. A 1ml sample vial is a completely different size and purchase. A decant is also different because the fragrance has been transferred into a separate container.
Before ordering, check four things:
- How many millilitres are included?
- Is it manufacturer/sample packaging, store-filled decant or an empty atomiser?
- Does the listing show a full-size source bottle only for reference?
- What return conditions apply to a hand-filled item?
Why sampling is more useful than a five-minute test
The opening is not the whole fragrance

Your normal environment matters
A fragrance can behave differently on a humid Auckland afternoon, a cool windy day, an air-conditioned office or a warm evening. Sampling lets you test the fragrance where you will actually wear it.
Performance cannot be guaranteed by concentration

The GONZ three-wear sample test
Use the same method each time
- Wear 1 — learn the shape: note opening, middle and late dry-down without comparing another scent on the same area.
- Wear 2 — test the job: work, outdoor day, dinner or whatever setting matters.
- Wear 3 — confirm: use a similar spray count and ask whether you still enjoy it after the novelty is gone.
For each wear, record four things: how much you enjoy the opening, how the dry-down changes, how noticeable it feels at a normal distance, and whether you would willingly reach for it again.
How many fragrances should you test at once?
Fewer is better for decision quality. Two or three finalists are easier to compare than ten strong perfumes sprayed in one session. Paper strips can help screen obvious dislikes; skin gives the more relevant full-wear test.
When an 8ml decant makes more sense than a 1ml vial
A tiny vial can answer “do I dislike this immediately?” An 8ml decant can be more useful when you need several normal wears across different conditions, want a travel size, or are deciding whether an expensive full bottle deserves a place in your collection.
The trade-off is presentation. A hand-filled decant is a practical fragrance format, not the original luxury bottle, box or official brand travel spray unless the listing explicitly says so.
Samples, decants and gifts

Storage and travel
- Keep small fragrance containers closed and away from direct sun and high heat.
- Do not leave them for long periods in a hot parked vehicle.
- Carry atomisers securely and upright where practical.
